The English along with Wales Placed Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in the same group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group once again, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the final, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both England and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
